The Biggest Medicare Mistakes Florida Seniors Make
After 29 years helping Florida seniors with Medicare, I have seen the same costly mistakes over and over. Here is how to avoid them.

The Biggest Medicare Mistakes Florida Seniors Make
In 29 years of helping Florida seniors navigate Medicare, I have seen the same mistakes come up again and again. Some are minor inconveniences. Others cost people thousands of dollars -- or leave them without the coverage they need when they need it most.
Here are the biggest Medicare mistakes I see, and exactly how to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Missing the Enrollment Window
Your Initial Enrollment Period is only 7 months long. Miss it without qualifying coverage, and you face permanent late enrollment penalties and a gap in coverage until the next General Enrollment Period.
The fix: Mark your calendar 3 months before your 65th birthday and start the enrollment process early.
Mistake #2: Assuming Medicare Covers Everything
Original Medicare covers about 80% of your medical costs. The remaining 20% -- plus deductibles, copays, and coinsurance -- is your responsibility. Without a supplement or Advantage plan, a single hospital stay can cost you thousands.
The fix: Add either a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan or a Medicare Advantage plan to cover your out-of-pocket costs.
Mistake #3: Choosing a Plan Based on Premium Alone
The cheapest plan is not always the best plan. A $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan might have a $7,000 annual out-of-pocket maximum -- meaning you could owe thousands if you have a serious illness.
The fix: Compare total potential costs, not just monthly premiums. Consider your health history and how often you use medical services.
Mistake #4: Not Checking If Your Doctors Are In-Network
Medicare Advantage plans use networks. If your doctor is not in the plan's network, you may pay significantly more -- or not be covered at all.
The fix: Before enrolling in any Medicare Advantage plan, verify that your primary care doctor and all specialists are in-network.
Mistake #5: Skipping Part D Because You Take No Medications
Many healthy seniors skip Part D coverage thinking they do not need it. Then they get a new diagnosis and suddenly need expensive medications -- and face both the late enrollment penalty and high drug costs.
The fix: Enroll in a low-cost Part D plan when you first become eligible. Even a $10/month plan protects you from the permanent penalty.
Mistake #6: Not Reviewing Your Plan Every Year
Medicare plans change every year. Premiums go up, formularies change, and networks shift. A plan that was perfect last year may not be the best option this year.
The fix: Review your Medicare coverage every Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 - December 7). I do this for all my clients at no charge.
Mistake #7: Relying on TV Commercials for Plan Information
Those Medicare commercials you see on TV are advertisements -- not unbiased advice. They are designed to sell you a specific plan, not find the best plan for your situation.
The fix: Work with an independent broker who represents multiple carriers and has no incentive to steer you toward any particular plan.
Mistake #8: Not Understanding the Difference Between Plan Types
Many seniors do not realize that Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement are fundamentally different products. Choosing the wrong type for your situation can be a costly mistake that is difficult to undo.
The fix: Take 30 minutes to understand both options before you enroll. I am happy to walk you through the differences at no cost.
Mistake #9: Waiting Until You Are Sick to Get a Medigap Plan
In most states, including Florida, you can only enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan without medical underwriting during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period -- the 6 months after you first enroll in Part B at age 65. After that window, insurers can deny you coverage or charge higher premiums based on your health.
The fix: Enroll in a Medigap plan during your open enrollment window, even if you are healthy. It is much harder to get coverage later.
Mistake #10: Going It Alone
Medicare is complicated. The rules change every year. Making decisions without independent guidance is one of the most common -- and most costly -- mistakes I see.
The fix: Work with an independent Medicare broker. My services are completely free to you -- I am paid by the insurance carriers when you enroll, at no extra cost to you.
