How to Compare Medicare Plans in Florida Without Getting Overwhelmed

Florida has one of the most competitive Medicare markets in the country. That is great news for seniors -- but it also means there are dozens of plans to sort through. The sheer volume of options can feel paralyzing.

Here is a simple, step-by-step process to compare Medicare plans in Florida without losing your mind.

Step 1: Understand the Two Main Paths

Before you start comparing specific plans, you need to decide which path you are on:

Path A: Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D

  • Original Medicare (Parts A and B) as your foundation
  • A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to cover the gaps
  • A standalone Part D plan for prescription drugs

Path B: Medicare Advantage

  • A private plan that replaces Original Medicare
  • Usually includes drug coverage
  • May include dental, vision, and hearing

These two paths are fundamentally different. Comparing a Medigap plan to a Medicare Advantage plan is like comparing apples to oranges -- you need to understand both before you can make an informed choice.

Step 2: Know Your Priorities

Before comparing plans, get clear on what matters most to you:

  • Keeping your doctors? → Check network restrictions carefully
  • Lowest monthly premium? → Medicare Advantage may win
  • Predictable costs? → Medigap typically wins
  • Travel or split time between states? → Medigap wins
  • Dental and vision benefits? → Medicare Advantage often wins
  • Chronic health conditions? → Medigap often provides better value

Step 3: Make a List of Your Medications

If you are considering Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan, your medications are critical. Make a complete list including:

  • Drug name (generic and brand)
  • Dosage
  • Frequency (how many times per day)
  • Preferred pharmacy

This list will be essential for comparing drug coverage and costs.

Step 4: List Your Healthcare Providers

If you are considering Medicare Advantage, list all your current healthcare providers:

  • Primary care physician
  • All specialists
  • Preferred hospital
  • Outpatient surgery centers
  • Labs and imaging centers

You will need to verify that each provider is in-network for any Medicare Advantage plan you consider.

Step 5: Compare Total Annual Costs -- Not Just Premiums

The monthly premium is just one piece of the cost puzzle. To compare plans accurately, estimate your total annual costs:

For Medigap:

  • Part B premium ($202.90/month)
  • Medigap premium (varies)
  • Part D premium (varies)
  • Part B deductible ($283/year)
  • Total: relatively predictable

For Medicare Advantage:

  • Part B premium ($202.90/month)
  • Plan premium (often $0)
  • Estimated copays based on your typical healthcare usage
  • Potential out-of-pocket maximum exposure
  • Total: lower if healthy, potentially much higher if you need significant care

Step 6: Use Medicare's Plan Finder Tool

Medicare's official Plan Finder at medicare.gov allows you to:

  • Compare Medicare Advantage plans in your zip code
  • Compare Part D plans based on your specific medications
  • See estimated annual costs for each plan

This is a valuable tool, but it can still be overwhelming. That is where I come in.

Step 7: Work With an Independent Broker

An independent Medicare broker -- one who represents multiple carriers -- can do the comparison work for you. I represent all major carriers in Florida and have no incentive to steer you toward any particular plan.

I will:

  • Explain both paths clearly
  • Verify your doctors are in-network
  • Compare drug costs across Part D plans
  • Find the lowest Medigap rate for your zip code
  • Answer every question you have -- without pressure

And my services are completely free to you.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

The best Medicare plan is not the one with the lowest premium or the most TV commercials. It is the one that fits your health needs, your doctors, your medications, and your budget.
