Medicare Advantage Extra Benefits: Dental, Vision, Hearing, and More

One of the most appealing features of Medicare Advantage plans is the extra benefits they offer beyond what Original Medicare covers. These extras -- dental, vision, hearing, fitness memberships, and more -- can provide real value, but they vary enormously from plan to plan.

Why MA Plans Offer Extra Benefits

Medicare Advantage plans receive a fixed monthly payment from CMS for each enrollee. Plans that operate efficiently can use a portion of that payment to offer additional benefits that attract and retain members. The more competitive the market, the richer the extra benefits tend to be.

Florida is one of the most competitive Medicare Advantage markets in the country -- which means Florida beneficiaries often have access to some of the most generous extra benefits available anywhere.

Dental Benefits

Most MA plans include some dental coverage -- but the depth of coverage varies significantly.

Preventive-only dental: Covers cleanings, exams, and X-rays at no cost. Does not cover fillings, crowns, or other restorative work.

Comprehensive dental: Covers preventive care plus an annual allowance ($500-$2,000) for basic and major services including fillings, extractions, crowns, and sometimes dentures or implants.

What to look for: The annual maximum, whether there's a waiting period for major services, and whether you must use a specific dental network.

Vision Benefits

Routine eye exam: Most plans cover one routine eye exam per year (not covered by Original Medicare).

Eyeglass or contact lens allowance: Many plans provide an annual allowance ($100-$300) toward frames, lenses, or contact lenses.

What to look for: Whether the allowance applies to any provider or only to a specific network (like VSP or EyeMed).

Hearing Benefits

Hearing exam: Most plans cover an annual hearing exam.

Hearing aid allowance: Many plans provide an annual or biennial allowance ($500-$2,500) toward hearing aids. Some plans partner with hearing networks (TruHearing, HearUSA) that offer discounted devices.

What to look for: The allowance amount, whether it covers one or two aids, and the hearing aid network.

Fitness Benefits

SilverSneakers: The most widely recognized senior fitness benefit -- provides free membership at thousands of gyms and fitness centers nationwide. Available on many MA plans in Florida.

Silver&Fit and Renew Active: Similar programs offered by other plans.

What to look for: Which gyms are included in your area. A SilverSneakers benefit is only valuable if there's a participating gym near you.

Transportation Benefits

Some plans cover non-emergency medical transportation -- rides to doctor appointments, pharmacies, and other medical facilities.

What to look for: Number of rides covered per year, whether rides must be scheduled in advance, and geographic coverage.

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Allowance

An increasingly common benefit -- a quarterly or monthly allowance (typically $25-$100) to spend on over-the-counter health products: vitamins, pain relievers, first aid supplies, and similar items. Usually delivered through a catalog or specific retail partners.

Meal Delivery

Some plans cover home-delivered meals after a hospital stay or for members with certain chronic conditions.

Telehealth

Most MA plans now include telehealth benefits -- virtual visits with doctors and specialists, often at no cost.

How to Compare Extra Benefits

Extra benefits are only valuable if you actually use them. When comparing plans:

  1. Identify which extras matter to you -- dental, vision, and hearing are the most universally valuable
  2. Calculate the dollar value -- a $1,500 dental allowance is worth more than a $500 allowance
  3. Check the networks -- dental and vision benefits tied to small networks may limit your options
  4. Don't let extras override core coverage -- a plan with great dental but poor drug coverage or a narrow doctor network may cost you more overall
