Medicare Basics for Sanford Seniors

Sanford is a growing Seminole County community with a rising senior population. If you are approaching Medicare eligibility in Sanford, here are the basics you need to know.

What Is Medicare?

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 and older (and certain younger people with disabilities). It is not free -- but it is far less expensive than most private insurance.

Medicare's Four Parts

Part A -- Hospital insurance. Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Free for most people.

Part B -- Medical insurance. Covers doctor visits, outpatient procedures, preventive care, and more. Standard premium: $202.90/month in 2026.

Part C -- Medicare Advantage. Private plans that replace Parts A and B, usually with extra benefits.

Part D -- Prescription drug coverage. Provided through private insurance plans.

When to Enroll in Medicare in Sanford

Your Initial Enrollment Period begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month. Enrolling during this window ensures your coverage starts on time and avoids late enrollment penalties.

Filling the Gaps in Sanford

Original Medicare covers 80% of most costs. The remaining 20% -- with no cap -- is your responsibility. Most Sanford seniors add either:

Medigap -- Covers the 20% coinsurance and other cost-sharing. Plan G is the most comprehensive option.

Medicare Advantage -- A private plan that replaces Original Medicare with a network-based system, often with $0 premiums and extra benefits.

Sanford's Healthcare Providers

  • AdventHealth Altamonte -- Serving Seminole County
  • Central Florida Regional Hospital -- Sanford's primary hospital
  • Orlando Health -- Multiple locations accessible from Sanford
