Medicare Coverage Explained for Lakeland Seniors

Lakeland is one of Central Florida's fastest-growing cities and a popular retirement destination in Polk County. If you are approaching Medicare eligibility or reviewing your current coverage, here is a clear explanation of your options in Lakeland.

What Medicare Covers in Lakeland

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people get Part A free if they worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) Covers doctor visits, outpatient procedures, preventive care, durable medical equipment, and more. The standard premium is $202.90/month in 2026.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drugs) Covers prescription medications through private insurance plans. The 2026 out-of-pocket cap is $2,100.

What Medicare Does NOT Cover

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing care. It also does not cover long-term custodial care or most care outside the United States.

Filling the Gaps in Lakeland

Medicare Advantage -- A private plan that replaces Original Medicare and often includes dental, vision, hearing, and drug coverage. Many Lakeland plans offer $0 premiums.

Medigap -- Supplements Original Medicare by covering the 20% coinsurance and other cost-sharing. Plan G is the most comprehensive option, leaving you responsible only for the $283 Part B deductible.

Lakeland's Healthcare Providers

  • Lakeland Regional Health -- The region's primary hospital and health system
  • Watson Clinic -- Large multispecialty medical group
  • AdventHealth Polk -- Serving Polk County

With a Medigap plan, you can use any of these providers without network concerns.
