Medicare Enrollment Deadlines in Palm Bay

Palm Bay is Brevard County's largest city and home to a large and growing senior population. One of the most important things Palm Bay seniors need to know: Medicare has strict enrollment deadlines, and missing them can result in permanent financial penalties.

Here are the key Medicare enrollment dates every Palm Bay senior needs to know.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window centered on your 65th birthday month:

  • 3 months before your birthday month
  • Your birthday month
  • 3 months after your birthday month

Enrolling in the first 3 months ensures your coverage starts on your birthday month. Enrolling in your birthday month or after may delay your coverage start date.

Missing your IEP without qualifying coverage results in permanent late enrollment penalties.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

If you have qualifying employer coverage (through your own or your spouse's active employment at a company with 20+ employees), you can delay Medicare without penalty. When that coverage ends, you have an 8-month SEP to enroll in Medicare.

Important: The SEP starts when employment ends OR when coverage ends -- whichever comes first. COBRA does not extend your SEP.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 - December 7 each year. This is when you can change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans. Changes take effect January 1.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

January 1 - March 31 each year. If you are already enrolled in Medicare Advantage, you can switch plans or return to Original Medicare during this window.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

January 1 - March 31 each year. If you missed your IEP without qualifying coverage, you can enroll during the GEP -- but you will face late enrollment penalties and your coverage will not start until July 1.

Palm Bay's Medicare Market

Palm Bay is in Brevard County, which has a solid Medicare market with plans from UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, and others. Health First Health Plans is a strong regional carrier with an excellent network in Brevard County.
