Medicare for Snowbirds: How Florida Residents Can Keep the Right Coverage

Florida is home to hundreds of thousands of snowbirds -- retirees who spend winters in the Sunshine State and summers up north. If you are one of them, your Medicare coverage needs to work in both places.

The wrong Medicare plan can leave you without coverage -- or facing enormous out-of-pocket costs -- when you are away from Florida. Here is what every snowbird needs to know.

The Problem With Medicare Advantage for Snowbirds

Medicare Advantage plans are built around local networks. They work great if you stay in one area -- but if you split your time between two states, you may find yourself out-of-network for half the year.

What happens when you use care outside your Medicare Advantage plan's service area:

  • Emergency care is always covered (by law)
  • Urgent care is usually covered
  • Routine care -- doctor visits, specialist appointments, elective procedures -- may NOT be covered out-of-network

This means if you spend six months in Ohio and your Medicare Advantage plan is Florida-based, you may have to pay full price for routine medical care while you are up north.

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer PPO options with broader out-of-area coverage, but even these typically charge higher cost-sharing for out-of-network providers.

Why Medicare Supplement Is the Best Choice for Snowbirds

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are the gold standard for snowbirds. Because they work alongside Original Medicare -- which is accepted by providers nationwide -- your coverage follows you wherever you go.

With a Medigap plan:

  • You can see any doctor or specialist in the country who accepts Medicare
  • No network restrictions -- ever
  • Your coverage works the same in Florida, Ohio, New York, or anywhere else
  • No referrals required

For snowbirds, Plan G is typically the best option. It covers virtually all out-of-pocket costs after the Part B deductible, giving you comprehensive, predictable coverage in both states.

What About Part D for Snowbirds?

Part D prescription drug plans have pharmacy networks that can vary by region. If you use a pharmacy in your northern state, check that it is in your Part D plan's network -- or choose a plan with a national pharmacy network (like CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart).

Most major Part D plans have nationwide pharmacy networks, so this is usually not a major issue. But it is worth verifying before you head north for the summer.

Tips for Snowbirds Managing Medicare in Two States

  1. Choose a Medigap plan over Medicare Advantage -- The nationwide coverage is worth the higher premium for most snowbirds.

  2. Keep a primary care doctor in both locations -- Many snowbirds establish relationships with doctors in both states. With a Medigap plan, this is easy.

  3. Use a national pharmacy chain -- CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart have locations in virtually every state and are in most Part D networks.

  4. Keep your Medicare card with you -- Original Medicare is accepted nationwide. Your red, white, and blue card is your ticket to care anywhere in the country.

  5. Review your coverage annually -- Your needs may change. I review my clients' coverage every year during Annual Enrollment Period to make sure they still have the best plan.
