Mental health is just as important as physical health -- and Medicare knows it. Thanks to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, Medicare is required to cover mental health services at the same level as medical and surgical care. But many Florida seniors don't realize how much is actually covered, or how to access it.

Here's a complete breakdown of what Medicare covers for mental health in 2026.

What Medicare Part A Covers

Medicare Part A covers inpatient psychiatric care -- meaning hospital stays for mental health treatment.

  • Inpatient psychiatric hospital stays (up to 190 lifetime days in a freestanding psychiatric facility)
  • Mental health care received during a general hospital stay
  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) when medically necessary

Important: The 190-day lifetime limit applies only to freestanding psychiatric hospitals -- not to mental health care received in a general hospital, which has no lifetime limit.

Your cost in 2026:

  • Days 1-60: $1,736 deductible (Part A deductible)
  • Days 61-90: $433/day coinsurance
  • Days 91+: $866/day (lifetime reserve days)

What Medicare Part B Covers

Part B covers outpatient mental health services, including:

  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Family counseling (when it helps your treatment)
  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Medication management
  • Depression and alcohol misuse screenings (free preventive benefit)
  • Annual wellness visit (includes mental health assessment)

Your cost: After meeting the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Your Part B premium is $202.90/month in 2026.

Who Can Provide Mental Health Services Under Part B?

Medicare Part B covers services from:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Psychologists
  • Licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs)
  • Licensed professional counselors (LPCs)
  • Marriage and family therapists (MFTs)
  • Nurse practitioners and physician assistants

This is a significant expansion -- Medicare now covers a much broader range of mental health providers than it did even five years ago.

Telehealth Mental Health Services

One of the most important changes in recent years: Medicare now permanently covers telehealth mental health services, including video therapy sessions from your home.

This is a major benefit for Florida seniors who:

  • Live in rural areas far from providers
  • Have mobility limitations
  • Prefer the privacy of home-based sessions
  • Struggle with transportation

You can receive therapy via video call with any Medicare-enrolled provider, regardless of where they're physically located.

Medicare Advantage and Mental Health

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, your mental health benefits must be at least as good as Original Medicare -- and many plans offer more:

  • Lower copays for therapy sessions
  • Expanded telehealth options
  • Behavioral health case management
  • Substance use disorder programs
  • Mental health crisis lines

Check your plan's Evidence of Coverage (EOC) for specific mental health benefits and network requirements.

Medicare Part D and Mental Health Medications

Medicare Part D covers psychiatric medications, including:

  • Antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics)
  • Anti-anxiety medications
  • Antipsychotics
  • Mood stabilizers (lithium, valproate)
  • ADHD medications
  • Sleep aids

Important: Part D plans must cover all or substantially all drugs in six "protected classes," including antidepressants and antipsychotics. This means your plan cannot simply drop coverage for these medications.

In 2026, the Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 -- a major benefit for seniors on expensive psychiatric medications.

Mental Health Screenings: Free Under Medicare

Medicare covers these mental health screenings at no cost to you (no deductible, no copay):

  • Depression screening -- once per year, in a primary care setting
  • Alcohol misuse screening and counseling -- once per year
  • Opioid use disorder treatment -- covered under Part B

These screenings are part of your Annual Wellness Visit, which is also free.

Finding Mental Health Providers in Florida

Florida has a significant shortage of mental health providers, particularly in rural areas. Here's how to find Medicare-enrolled providers:

  1. Medicare.gov Provider Finder -- search for psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists who accept Medicare
  2. SAMHSA's Treatment Locator -- findtreatment.gov for substance use and mental health services
  3. Florida Department of Children and Families -- myflfamilies.com for state mental health resources
  4. SHINE Program -- Florida's free Medicare counseling service can help you understand your mental health benefits

Common Mental Health Conditions Medicare Covers Treatment For

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Substance use disorders
  • Dementia-related behavioral symptoms

What Medicare Does NOT Cover for Mental Health

  • Custodial care in a psychiatric facility (long-term, non-medical care)
  • Most residential treatment programs
  • Marriage counseling (unless it's part of your individual treatment plan)
  • Life coaching or wellness coaching
  • Most alternative therapies (meditation classes, yoga therapy)

The Bottom Line

Medicare's mental health coverage is more comprehensive than most seniors realize. Between Part A inpatient coverage, Part B outpatient therapy, telehealth options, and Part D medication coverage, you have access to a full continuum of mental health care.
