Medicare Tips for Wellington Seniors

Wellington is one of Palm Beach County's most affluent and desirable communities -- known for its equestrian culture, excellent schools, and active lifestyle. Wellington seniors tend to be well-informed and proactive about their healthcare. Here are the most important Medicare tips to help you make the most of your coverage.

Tip #1: Enroll on Time

Your Initial Enrollment Period begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month. Missing this window without qualifying employer coverage results in permanent late enrollment penalties. Mark your calendar and start the process early.

Tip #2: Do Not Rely on TV Commercials

Medicare Advantage plans advertise heavily on television. The plans with the most commercials are not necessarily the best plans for your situation. Work with an independent broker who compares all available options -- not just the ones with the biggest advertising budgets.

Tip #3: Verify Your Doctors Before Enrolling

If you choose Medicare Advantage, verify your Wellington-area doctors and preferred hospitals are in-network before enrolling. I do this verification for my clients as part of my free consultation.

Tip #4: Compare Total Annual Costs

The monthly premium is just one piece of the cost puzzle. Compare total annual costs -- premium plus estimated copays and coinsurance -- to find the plan that offers the best value for your healthcare usage.

Tip #5: Review Your Coverage Every Year

Medicare plans change every year. Review your coverage during Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 - December 7) to make sure you still have the best plan. I review my clients' coverage every year at no charge.

Tip #6: Consider Your Travel Plans

Wellington seniors who travel frequently or split time between Florida and other states should consider Medigap plans, which work nationwide. Medicare Advantage plans are local.

Wellington's Healthcare Access

Wellington is served by Palm Beach County's excellent healthcare network, including Wellington Regional Medical Center and the broader HCA Florida network.
