Medicare Enrollment Guidance

How to Sign Up for Medicare in Lebanon, Missouri

Signing up for Medicare in Lebanon follows the federal enrollment process administered by the Social Security Administration.

Important: Enrolling in Original Medicare Part A and Part B is a federal process administered by the Social Security Administration (or the Railroad Retirement Board for RRB beneficiaries). The Medicare Dude is an independent insurance broker — we help you understand your options and prepare for coverage decisions after enrollment, but we do not process Medicare enrollment applications.

Lebanon is located in Laclede County, Missouri. Medicare Advantage and Part D plan availability is determined by county and by your residential ZIP code.

Missouri does not have a Medigap Birthday Rule. Outside a Medigap Open Enrollment Period or another applicable guaranteed-issue right, changing Medicare Supplement coverage in Lebanon may require medical underwriting.

How Medicare Enrollment Works

Your Initial Enrollment Period

For most people, the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the first opportunity to enroll in Medicare. It is a seven-month window: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after.

If you miss your IEP without a qualifying reason, you may face a late enrollment penalty and have to wait for a General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31 each year), with coverage starting July 1.

Automatic enrollment vs. active enrollment

If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits before you turn 65, you will generally be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B automatically.

If you are not yet receiving Social Security or RRB benefits, you will need to actively enroll through Social Security at ssa.gov, by phone, or in person.

Employer coverage and delayed Part B

If you or your spouse has active employer coverage from a current employer (not COBRA or retiree coverage), you may be able to delay Part B without penalty. Ask your benefits administrator how your employer coverage coordinates with Medicare.

When your employer coverage ends, you will generally have an eight-month Special Enrollment Period to sign up for Part B without penalty.

HSA considerations

Once you are enrolled in any part of Medicare, you can no longer make new HSA contributions. Review the timing carefully with a tax professional before enrolling.

Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries

If you receive Railroad Retirement Board benefits, your Medicare enrollment is handled by the RRB. Contact the RRB directly at rrb.gov for enrollment questions specific to your situation.

After Enrollment: Coverage Decisions

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage

Once you have Medicare Part A and Part B, you can stay with Original Medicare and add a Medigap plan and Part D — or choose a Medicare Advantage plan. Original Medicare with Medigap offers broad provider access. Medicare Advantage plans often have lower premiums but use provider networks.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) in Missouri

Missouri does not have a Medigap Birthday Rule. Outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, Medigap insurers in Missouri may use medical underwriting. Enrolling during your Open Enrollment Period gives you federal guaranteed-issue rights.

Plan G and Plan N are the most commonly compared Medigap options. An independent broker can compare current premiums from multiple carriers at no cost to you.

Part D prescription drug coverage

If you have Original Medicare, you will typically need a standalone Part D plan. Enrolling when you first become eligible helps you avoid a late enrollment penalty.

Use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov to compare Part D plans based on your specific medications.
