The short answer

In most cases, you do not pay a separate fee to work with an independent Medicare broker. Insurance carriers compensate brokers directly for plans they help enroll. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through a broker or directly through the insurance company.

How carrier compensation works

When you enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan through an independent broker, the insurance carrier pays the broker a commission. This commission is built into the carrier's cost structure — it is not an additional charge added to your premium. Medicare Supplement premiums are filed with and approved by your state's insurance department. A broker cannot charge you more than the filed rate.

This compensation model is standard across the insurance industry and is regulated at the state level. It is how independent agents and brokers are compensated for Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Part D plans.

What "independent" means

An independent broker is not a captive agent for a single insurance company. William represents multiple Medicare Supplement carriers. He can compare the plans available through those carriers in your area and help you evaluate which one fits your doctors, prescriptions, and budget.

William does not represent every carrier in the market. If a plan he does not represent appears to be a better fit for your situation, he will tell you that. His goal is to help you make an informed decision — not to hit a quota for any single carrier.

Frequently asked questions

Does working with a Medicare broker cost me anything?

In most cases, you do not pay a separate fee to work with an independent Medicare broker. Carriers compensate brokers directly for plans they help enroll. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through a broker or directly through the insurance company — the broker's compensation comes from the carrier, not from an additional charge to you.

Does using a broker change my premium?

No. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) premiums are set by the insurance company and filed with your state's insurance department. An independent broker cannot charge you more than the filed rate, and working with one does not add to your premium.

Does William represent every Medicare plan available?

No. William is an independent broker who represents multiple Medicare Supplement carriers. He can compare the plans available through those carriers in your area. He does not represent every carrier in the market, and he will tell you that clearly. If a plan he does not represent appears to be a better fit, he will say so.

Is William required to recommend the plan that pays him the most?

No. As an independent broker, William is not captive to any single carrier and is not required to recommend any particular plan. His goal is to help you find coverage that fits your doctors, prescriptions, and budget from the carriers he represents.

What does William do after I enroll?

William remains available after your policy starts. If you have billing questions, need to understand a rate increase, are moving, or want to review your options at any point, you can call him directly. You are not handed off to a call center.

Have a question about broker compensation?

William is happy to explain exactly how he is compensated for any plan he recommends — before you enroll. There are no surprises.
