Medicare Special Enrollment Period — Florida Relocation

Moving to Florida and Medicare: Your Complete 2026 Guide

Moving to Florida is one of the most common reasons Medicare beneficiaries trigger a Special Enrollment Period. Whether you're retiring to Jacksonville, Palm Coast, or anywhere in the Sunshine State, your current Medicare plan may not follow you — and you have a limited window to make changes.

Why Your Current Medicare Plan May Not Work in Florida

Medicare Advantage plans are geographically restricted — your current plan's network likely does not extend to Florida. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) works nationwide, but a Medicare Supplement plan from another state may need to be re-evaluated for Florida rates.

Medicare Advantage

Network-based plans are state and county specific. Your current MA plan almost certainly does not cover Florida providers except for emergencies.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medigap plans are standardized federally, so Plan G in Ohio is the same benefits as Plan G in Florida — but Florida rates and carriers differ. Your move is an opportunity to shop Florida rates.

Medicare Part D

Part D drug plans vary by region. Your current plan's formulary and pharmacy network may change when you move to Florida.

Your Special Enrollment Period When Moving to Florida

Moving to a new state triggers a Medicare Special Enrollment Period. Here is exactly how it works.

  1. 1

You have a 2-month SEP window

When you move to a new service area, you have a 2-month Special Enrollment Period to change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. This window begins the month you move.

  2. 2

Medigap open enrollment does not reset

Moving to Florida does NOT give you a new Medigap open enrollment period unless you are within your initial 6-month Medigap open enrollment window (the 6 months after you first enroll in Part B). Outside that window, Florida carriers can use medical underwriting.

  3. 3

    Guaranteed issue rights may apply

If you had a Medicare Advantage plan that is no longer available in Florida, you may have guaranteed issue rights to purchase certain Medigap plans without medical underwriting. An independent broker can confirm whether you qualify.

  4. 4

Part D: enroll within 2 months

If your current Part D plan does not cover your new Florida ZIP code, enroll in a new plan within 2 months of your move to avoid a late enrollment penalty.

Medicare Moving Checklist: Before, During, and After

Before your move

  • Confirm whether your current Medicare Advantage plan covers Florida
  • Get quotes for Florida Medicare Supplement plans (rates vary by county)
  • Compare Part D plans available in your new Florida ZIP code
  • Contact an independent Florida Medicare broker — ideally 60–90 days before your move
  • Notify Social Security of your new address (affects Part B premium billing)

During your move (first 30 days)

  • Confirm your move date — this starts your SEP clock
  • Notify Medicare of your new Florida address
  • Enroll in a new Medicare Advantage or Part D plan if needed
  • If switching to Medigap, apply before your SEP window closes

After your move

  • Confirm your new plan's effective date
  • Update your pharmacy to a Florida location in your Part D plan's network
  • Verify your primary care physician is in-network under your new plan
  • Keep your old plan's EOB records for any pending claims

Florida Medicare: What's Different About the Sunshine State

Florida is a Medicare Advantage hotspot

Florida has one of the highest Medicare Advantage penetration rates in the country. Major carriers — Humana, UHC, Aetna, Florida Blue — compete aggressively, often offering $0-premium plans with rich extras.

Medigap rates vary by county

Florida uses attained-age rating for most Medigap plans, meaning premiums increase as you age. Rates also vary significantly by county — Palm Beach County rates differ from Duval County rates.

Medigap switching rights in Florida

Florida does not currently have an annual Medigap Birthday Rule. Outside of your initial Open Enrollment Period, switching Medigap carriers generally requires passing medical underwriting unless a qualifying federal guaranteed-issue event applies. An independent broker can confirm which switching rights apply to your situation.

Part D formularies differ by region

Florida's Part D landscape includes plans with strong mail-order pharmacy networks. Comparing formularies for your specific medications is essential before enrolling.
