How Plan G works

Plan G Works Alongside Original Medicare — Not Instead of It

Medicare Supplement Plan G is a private insurance policy that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B). It does not replace Medicare — it fills in the gaps that Medicare leaves behind.

Here is the basic flow: when you receive a covered medical service, Medicare pays its share first. For most outpatient services, Medicare pays 80% of the approved amount. Plan G then steps in and pays most or all of the remaining 20%, along with other cost-sharing amounts that Medicare does not cover.

The result is near-complete coverage for Medicare-approved services. With Plan G, your out-of-pocket exposure is limited to one predictable annual amount — the Medicare Part B deductible — and nothing else for covered services.

Plan G is standardized by the federal government under the Standardized Medicare Supplement Plans regulation. Every insurance company that sells Plan G in Florida must offer exactly the same set of benefits. The coverage is identical regardless of which carrier you choose. The only meaningful difference between carriers is the monthly premium.

1

You receive a covered medical service

Any service Medicare Part A or Part B approves — hospital stays, doctor visits, outpatient procedures, durable medical equipment, and more.

2

Medicare pays its share

Medicare Part A or Part B pays its portion of the approved amount, subject to its own deductibles and coinsurance rules.

3

Plan G pays the remainder

Plan G covers the Part A deductible, Part B coinsurance (20%), excess charges, and other gaps — leaving you with little to no out-of-pocket cost.

4

You pay only the Part B deductible

In 2026, the Medicare Part B deductible is $283 per year. Once you meet it, Plan G covers the rest for the remainder of the year.

What Plan G covers

What Medicare Supplement Plan G Covers

Plan G covers nearly every gap in Original Medicare. The following is the complete list of benefits included in every Plan G policy sold in Florida.

Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs

Covers your share of inpatient hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted. This is one of the most significant protections Plan G provides — a long hospital stay can otherwise cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Medicare Part A deductible

In 2026, the Medicare Part A deductible is $1,676 per benefit period. Plan G pays this in full. Without a supplement plan, you would owe this amount each time you are admitted to a hospital for a new benefit period.

Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment

Covers the small coinsurance amounts Medicare may charge for hospice-related prescription drugs and inpatient respite care.

Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment

Medicare Part B pays 80% of approved outpatient costs. Plan G pays the remaining 20% — with no annual cap. For expensive outpatient procedures or ongoing specialist care, this protection is substantial.

Medicare Part B excess charges

When a doctor does not accept Medicare assignment, they can charge up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount. Plan G covers this excess charge in full. Plan N does not cover excess charges — this is one of the key differences between the two plans.

Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance

Medicare covers skilled nursing facility care for days 1–20 at no cost. For days 21–100, Medicare charges a daily coinsurance amount ($209.50 per day in 2026). Plan G covers this coinsurance in full.

Blood (first 3 pints)

Medicare does not cover the first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure. Plan G covers this cost.

Foreign travel emergency (80%, up to plan limits)

Plan G covers 80% of the cost of emergency medical care received outside the United States, up to a lifetime maximum of $50,000 after a $250 deductible. Original Medicare provides no foreign travel coverage.

What Plan G does not cover

Plan G is comprehensive, but it does not cover everything. Understanding what is excluded helps you plan for any remaining out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Part B deductible

The one cost Plan G does not cover. In 2026, this is $283 per year. You pay this once annually before Plan G begins covering your Part B coinsurance.

Prescription drugs (Part D)

Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage. You will need a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan if you want drug coverage.

Dental, vision, and hearing

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing services, and neither does Plan G. Standalone dental and vision plans are available separately.

Long-term custodial care

Plan G covers skilled nursing facility coinsurance but does not cover long-term custodial care (assistance with daily living activities). Long-term care insurance is a separate product.

Non-Medicare-approved services

Plan G only covers services that Medicare approves. If Medicare denies a claim, Plan G will not pay it either.

Who Plan G is right for

Who Plan G Is — and Is Not — Right For

Plan G is the most popular Medicare Supplement plan among new enrollees for good reason. But it is not the right choice for everyone. Here is an honest assessment of who benefits most from Plan G and who might be better served by a different option.

Plan G tends to be a strong fit if you:

Want the most comprehensive coverage available

If your priority is minimizing out-of-pocket exposure and having predictable costs, Plan G delivers that better than any other plan available to new Medicare enrollees.

See specialists or have ongoing health conditions

Plan G covers Part B excess charges, which matter most when you see doctors who do not accept Medicare assignment. If you have complex health needs and see multiple specialists, this protection is valuable.

Travel internationally

Plan G includes foreign travel emergency coverage. If you spend time outside the United States, this benefit provides meaningful protection that Original Medicare does not.

Value predictability over lowest possible premium

Plan G has a higher monthly premium than Plan N or Plan K. But it also has the lowest out-of-pocket exposure. If you prefer knowing exactly what your healthcare will cost each year, Plan G delivers that certainty.

Are enrolling during your Open Enrollment Period

During your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period — the six months after you turn 65 and enroll in Part B — you can enroll in Plan G with no medical underwriting. This is the best time to lock in comprehensive coverage.

You might consider a different plan if you:

Are in excellent health and rarely use medical services

If you are healthy and your primary concern is keeping monthly costs low, Plan N offers similar coverage at a lower premium — with the tradeoff of copays and no excess charge coverage.

Have a very tight monthly budget

Plan G's premium is higher than Plan N or Plan K. If the monthly cost is a significant concern, comparing Plan N side by side with Plan G may reveal a better fit for your budget.

Are considering Medicare Advantage instead

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a fundamentally different type of coverage — it replaces Original Medicare rather than supplementing it. It typically has lower premiums but includes network restrictions, referral requirements, and variable out-of-pocket costs. Plan G and Medicare Advantage are not comparable products.

Common misconceptions

Common Misconceptions About Medicare Supplement Plan G

Myth

"Plan G and Plan F are the same thing."

Reality

They are similar but not identical. Plan F covered the Medicare Part B deductible; Plan G does not. Plan F was discontinued for new enrollees after January 1, 2020. If you became eligible for Medicare on or after that date, Plan F is not available to you. Plan G is the most comprehensive plan currently available to new enrollees.

Myth

"The coverage is different depending on which company I buy from."

Reality

No. Plan G is federally standardized. Every carrier that sells Plan G in Florida must provide exactly the same benefits. A Plan G from Carrier A covers the same services as a Plan G from Carrier B. The only difference is the monthly premium — which is why comparing carriers is so important.

Myth

"I can switch to Plan G anytime if I decide I want better coverage."

Reality

Outside your Open Enrollment Period, switching to Plan G requires passing medical underwriting. Carriers can deny your application or charge a higher premium based on your health history. If you are in good health now, enrolling in Plan G during your Open Enrollment window protects your access to comprehensive coverage regardless of what happens to your health later.

Myth

"Plan G covers everything — I will have no out-of-pocket costs."

Reality

Plan G covers nearly everything, but not quite everything. You are still responsible for the Medicare Part B deductible ($283 in 2026) each year. Beyond that, Plan G covers all other Medicare-approved cost-sharing. Prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing are separate and not included.

Myth

"I should just buy Plan G from the same company that has my car or home insurance."

Reality

Bundling may make sense for auto and home insurance, but Medicare Supplement is different. The coverage is identical across carriers — so the only reason to choose one carrier over another is price and rate stability. Your auto insurer may not be the most competitive carrier for Plan G in your ZIP code. Comparing multiple carriers is the only way to know.

Myth

"The lowest premium is always the best deal."

Reality

Not necessarily. A carrier with a very low introductory rate but a history of aggressive annual increases can end up costing significantly more over five or ten years than a carrier with a slightly higher starting rate and a stable track record. Premium history matters as much as the current rate.
