What Is Medicare Plan N?
Plan N is a standardized Medicare Supplement plan that covers most Original Medicare cost-sharing while keeping your monthly premium lower than Plan G.
Like all Medigap plans, Plan N works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Medicare pays first, then Plan N covers most of what remains — hospital stays, skilled nursing coinsurance, and most Part B services — after small copays.
Plan N does not cover the Part B deductible ($257 in 2026) or Part B excess charges. In exchange for accepting these two gaps, you pay a meaningfully lower monthly premium than Plan G enrollees.
What Plan N Covers
Plan N covers the same core benefits as Plan G — with two exceptions. Here is the complete picture:
Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
Covers your share of inpatient hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted.
Medicare Part A deductible
Covers the $1,676 per-benefit-period hospital deductible in 2026.
Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance
Covers coinsurance or copayments for hospice care.
Medicare Part B coinsurance (with copays)
Covers Part B coinsurance after you pay a copay of up to $20 for office visits and up to $50 for ER visits that do not result in inpatient admission.
Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
Covers days 21–100 of a skilled nursing facility stay — up to $209.50 per day in 2026.
Foreign travel emergency care
Covers 80% of emergency care outside the U.S. after a $250 deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime maximum.
Blood (first 3 pints)
Covers the cost of the first three pints of blood per year.
What Plan N Does Not Cover
Medicare Part B deductible
$257 in 2026. You pay this once per year before Plan N covers Part B services.
Part B excess charges
Up to 15% above Medicare-approved rates when a provider does not accept Medicare assignment. Most Florida providers accept assignment, making this a minor risk for most enrollees.
Office visit copays (up to $20)
You pay up to $20 per covered Part B office visit. Many visits are $0 copay; the $20 maximum applies to specialist visits.
Emergency room copay (up to $50)
You pay up to $50 for ER visits that do not result in inpatient admission. If you are admitted, the copay is waived.
Plan N vs Plan G: Which Is Right for You?
This is the most common question I get from people turning 65 in Florida. Here is the honest comparison:
| Feature | Plan G | Plan N |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly premium (age 65, FL) | ~$120–$175 | ~$95–$145 |
| Part A deductible | Covered | Covered |
| Part B deductible | Not covered | Not covered |
| Part B coinsurance | Covered (no copay) | Covered (up to $20 copay) |
| ER copay | None | Up to $50 (waived if admitted) |
| Part B excess charges | Covered | Not covered |
| Skilled nursing coinsurance | Covered | Covered |
| Foreign travel emergency | Covered (80%) | Covered (80%) |
The break-even math is straightforward: if your Plan N premium is $35/month less than Plan G, you would need to pay the $20 office copay nearly twice per month just to break even. Most people see their doctor 4–8 times per year, making Plan N the better value in most cases.

How Much Does Plan N Cost in Florida?
Plan N premiums in Florida in 2026 typically range from about $95 to $160 per month for a 65-year-old non-tobacco female, depending on county and carrier. Men generally pay 5–10% more. Tobacco users pay a surcharge of 10–20% with most carriers.
Because Plan N benefits are federally standardized, every carrier offers identical coverage. The only variables are the monthly premium, the carrier's rate-increase history, and their financial strength rating. Choosing the cheapest carrier without reviewing their rate history is a common mistake — a carrier with aggressive initial pricing but steep annual increases can cost more over 5–10 years than a slightly more expensive but stable carrier.
Age 65

Age 70

Who Is Plan N Best For?
Plan N is a strong fit for a specific type of Medicare beneficiary. Here are the four profiles where Plan N consistently wins:
Moderate healthcare users
You see your primary care doctor 2–4 times per year and occasionally visit a specialist. The copays are predictable and the premium savings more than offset them.
Assignment-accepting patients
Your doctors accept Medicare assignment, eliminating the excess charge risk. Most Florida physicians and specialists accept assignment — confirm with your providers before enrolling.
Budget-conscious retirees
You want comprehensive coverage but prefer a lower fixed monthly cost. Plan N's premium savings of $30–$50/month add up to $360–$600 per year.
Healthy new enrollees at 65
You are enrolling during your Open Enrollment Period and want to lock in a lower premium while you are healthy. You can always switch to Plan G later if your health needs change (subject to underwriting).
