GI window: approximately November 2026 – March 2027

For a January 1, 2027 plan termination, your guaranteed-issue window typically runs from approximately November 1, 2026 through March 5, 2027. Do not wait until January — you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan before your Humana plan ends, with coverage effective January 1, 2027.

What This Means for Virginia Medicare Beneficiaries

Virginia has a substantial Medicare Advantage enrollment population, and Humana has been an active carrier in many Virginia markets. Members in affected Virginia areas who receive a plan termination or non-renewal notice have federal guaranteed-issue rights to enroll in certain Medicare Supplement plans — without medical underwriting.

Virginia does not have a state-level Birthday Rule or continuous open enrollment for Medicare Supplement plans. This makes the federal guaranteed-issue window especially important for Virginia residents. Once the 63-day window closes, insurers can apply medical underwriting in Virginia, which may result in higher premiums or denial of coverage based on health history.

Plan G is the most commonly selected Medicare Supplement plan for new enrollees in Virginia in 2026. Eligible beneficiaries whose Medicare Advantage plan is terminating may have a federal guaranteed-issue right to Plan G. Under the MACRA framework, Plan G is the applicable alternative to Plan F for people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. An independent broker can confirm which plans you qualify for based on your specific termination notice.

Part D Drug Coverage — Act Before December 7, 2026

If you switch from Humana Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare plus a Supplement, you will lose your bundled drug coverage. Enroll in a standalone Part D plan during the Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027. Missing this window can result in a late-enrollment penalty.

Virginia-specific questions

Which Virginia counties are affected by Humana's 2027 changes?

Humana has not publicly released a final county-by-county list for all affected markets. Affected members will receive a plan termination or non-renewal notice by mail. If you have not received a notice by mid-October 2026, contact Humana directly or call 1-800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227) to confirm your plan's status.

Can I get Plan G under guaranteed-issue rights in Virginia?

Yes — eligible beneficiaries whose Medicare Advantage plan is terminating may have a federal guaranteed-issue right to Medicare Supplement Plan G. Under the MACRA framework, Plan G is the applicable alternative to Plan F for people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. Eligibility depends on receiving an actual plan termination or service-area reduction notice for your specific plan. An independent broker can review your situation and confirm all available options.

Does Virginia have a Birthday Rule for Medicare Supplement?

No. Virginia does not have a Birthday Rule or continuous open enrollment for Medicare Supplement plans. Outside of applicable Open Enrollment or federal guaranteed-issue rights, changing Medicare Supplement plans in Virginia may require medical underwriting. The federal GI window triggered by a Humana plan termination is one of the strongest protections available to Virginia residents in this situation.

Is there a cost to work with an independent Medicare broker in Virginia?

No. Independent Medicare brokers are compensated by the insurance carriers, not by you. The premium you pay is the same whether you enroll through a broker or directly with the carrier. A broker gives you access to multiple carriers and unbiased comparisons.

"Very Knowledgable and personable! William made a seemingly difficult transition easy and seamless. I appreciated his unbiased opinion and personalized what was best for me. He took great care in listening to my concerns. I never felt rushed and felt he took a personal interest in assisting me to make the best choice. Not one of those "Big box" sales as seen on TV. Highly recommend William."
