Best Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in Florida Explained

If you want comprehensive, predictable Medicare coverage in Florida, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan is often the best choice. But with multiple plan types available, how do you know which one is right for you?

In this guide, I will break down the three most popular Medigap plans for Florida seniors in 2026: Plan G, Plan N, and High-Deductible Plan G (HDG).

What Is a Medicare Supplement Plan?

A Medicare Supplement plan is a private insurance policy that works alongside Original Medicare. It pays some or all of the costs that Medicare does not cover -- including copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government. That means Plan G from Mutual of Omaha covers exactly the same benefits as Plan G from Transamerica. The only difference is the monthly premium and the company's financial strength and customer service.

Plan G: The Gold Standard

Plan G is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available to new Medicare enrollees. It covers everything except the Medicare Part B deductible ($283 in 2026).

What Plan G covers:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency costs (up to plan limits)

What Plan G does NOT cover:

  • The Medicare Part B deductible ($283/year in 2026)
  • Dental, vision, or hearing
  • Prescription drugs (you need a separate Part D plan)

Who Plan G is best for: Seniors who want maximum coverage and predictable costs, those with ongoing health conditions, frequent travelers, and snowbirds who need nationwide coverage.

Plan N: The Budget-Friendly Alternative

Plan N offers most of the same benefits as Plan G at a lower monthly premium. The trade-off: you pay small copays for office visits and emergency room visits, and you are responsible for Part B excess charges.

How Plan N differs from Plan G:

  • Up to $20 copay for office visits
  • Up to $50 copay for emergency room visits (waived if admitted)
  • Does NOT cover Part B excess charges

Who Plan N is best for: Healthy seniors who rarely visit the doctor and want to save on monthly premiums. If you see your doctor only a few times a year, the premium savings can outweigh the copays.

High-Deductible Plan G (HDG): The Low-Premium Option

High-Deductible Plan G has the same benefits as standard Plan G, but you pay a high deductible ($2,870 in 2026) before the plan kicks in.

Who HDG is best for: Very healthy seniors who want catastrophic protection at the lowest possible premium. If you rarely use medical services, HDG can save you significant money in premiums while still protecting you from major expenses.

How to Choose the Right Plan

The right plan depends on your health, your budget, and how often you use medical services.

  • If you have ongoing health conditions: Plan G gives you the most comprehensive coverage and the most predictable costs.
  • If you are healthy and want to save on premiums: Plan N is a solid middle ground.
  • If you are very healthy and want the lowest premium: HDG offers catastrophic protection at minimal cost.

Why the Carrier Matters

Since all Plan G policies cover the same benefits, the carrier you choose matters for two reasons: price and stability. I represent 15+ Medigap carriers in Florida and can compare rates from all of them to find you the lowest premium for the coverage you need.
