Top Questions About Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in Palm Coast
Palm Coast seniors have a lot of questions about Medigap. Here are the most common ones -- answered clearly and honestly by a local Florida Medicare broker.
Top Questions About Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in Palm Coast
Every week I talk with Palm Coast seniors who have heard about Medicare Supplement plans -- also called Medigap -- but are not quite sure how they work, whether they need one, or how to choose between them.
Here are the most common questions I hear, answered as clearly as I can.
What Is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan?
A Medicare Supplement plan is a private insurance policy that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to cover costs that Medicare leaves behind -- things like:
- The 20% coinsurance that Medicare does not pay for doctor visits and outpatient care
- Hospital deductibles and daily copays for extended stays
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- Foreign travel emergency coverage (on some plans)
Medigap does not replace Medicare. It supplements it -- hence the name.
How Is Medigap Different From Medicare Advantage?
This is the most common point of confusion for Palm Coast seniors.
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that has its own network, copays, and rules. You are essentially trading Medicare for a managed care plan.
Medigap keeps you on Original Medicare and adds a layer of coverage on top. You keep the freedom to see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare -- no networks, no referrals, no prior authorizations for covered services.
For Palm Coast seniors who travel, see specialists in other cities, or simply want predictable costs, Medigap is often the better long-term choice.
Which Medigap Plan Is Best for Palm Coast Seniors?
The two most popular plans for new enrollees in 2026 are Plan G and Plan N.
Plan G
Plan G covers virtually everything Medicare does not -- except the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). After you pay that deductible once per year, Plan G covers 100% of your Medicare-approved costs for the rest of the year.
Plan G is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available to new enrollees and is the most popular choice for Palm Coast seniors who want maximum coverage and predictability.
Plan N
Plan N covers most of what Plan G covers, with two differences:
- You pay up to $20 copay for doctor visits
- You pay up to $50 copay for emergency room visits (waived if admitted)
- You may be responsible for Part B excess charges (rare, but possible)
Plan N typically costs $20-$40/month less than Plan G. If you are in good health and do not see doctors frequently, Plan N can save you money over time.
What About Plan F?
Plan F was the gold standard of Medigap coverage for years -- it covered the Part B deductible too. However, Plan F is no longer available to anyone who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020. If you turned 65 after that date, Plan F is not an option for you.
How Much Does Medigap Cost in Palm Coast?
Medigap premiums in Palm Coast vary by:
- Plan type (Plan G vs. Plan N)
- Your age -- premiums are typically lower when you first enroll at 65
- The insurance company -- the same plan (same benefits) can vary by $50-$100/month between carriers
- Tobacco use -- smokers pay higher premiums
As a rough guide, Palm Coast seniors in their mid-60s can expect to pay:
- Plan G: approximately $120-$180/month
- Plan N: approximately $90-$140/month
These are estimates -- actual rates depend on your specific age and the carriers available in your ZIP code. Because the benefits are standardized by law, the only reason to pay more is if you prefer a particular carrier's reputation or customer service.
Can I Be Denied Medigap Coverage in Florida?
This is an important question. During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period -- the 6 months starting the month you turn 65 and enroll in Part B -- insurance companies cannot deny you coverage or charge you more based on your health history. This is your guaranteed issue right.
After that window closes, insurers in Florida can use medical underwriting, which means they can deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on pre-existing conditions.
This is why timing matters. Enrolling in Medigap at 65 during your Open Enrollment Period is almost always the right move if you want this type of coverage.
Does Medigap Cover Prescription Drugs?
No. Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. If you choose Medigap, you will need to enroll in a separate Part D prescription drug plan.
In 2026, the Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 -- a significant improvement that makes standalone Part D plans more attractive than ever.
Can I Use My Medigap Plan Outside of Palm Coast?
Yes -- and this is one of Medigap's biggest advantages. Your Medigap plan works with any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare. Whether you are visiting family in Georgia, spending the winter in Arizona, or traveling internationally (Plan G includes limited foreign travel emergency coverage), your coverage travels with you.
This is a major advantage over Medicare Advantage HMO plans, which typically only cover emergency care outside their service area.
How Do I Enroll in a Medigap Plan in Palm Coast?
- Enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A and B) first -- you must have both to be eligible for Medigap
- Compare plans and carriers -- I can do this for you at no cost
- Apply during your Open Enrollment Period to guarantee acceptance regardless of health history
- Enroll in a standalone Part D plan for prescription drug coverage
