Getting Started: Tennis for Beginners Over 50
If you've never played tennis — or haven't played in decades — here's how to get started:
1. Take a beginner clinic first. Most facilities offer beginner clinics specifically for adults. These are typically 4–6 sessions that cover the basics of the game in a low-pressure, social environment. Much better than trying to learn from YouTube.
2. Start with a lighter racquet. Modern racquets are much lighter than the racquets of 20–30 years ago. A lighter racquet (9–10 oz) is easier on the arm and wrist. Ask a pro shop for a recommendation.
3. Consider pickleball as a bridge. Many tennis beginners find pickleball easier to learn first — the smaller court and slower ball make rallying easier. Many players do both sports.
4. Join a social round-robin. Round-robins rotate partners and opponents every few games, which means you'll meet lots of people and play a variety of styles. They're the best way to improve quickly and build a social network around the sport.
5. Be patient with your body. Tennis uses muscles and movements that most people don't use in daily life. Expect some soreness in your first few weeks. Warm up properly, cool down, and don't push through pain.
USTA Senior Leagues
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) organizes competitive leagues for adults at every skill level, including specific senior divisions:
- 55+ Doubles: The most popular senior league format
- 65+ Doubles: For older players who want age-appropriate competition
- Super Senior (70+, 75+, 80+): Yes, competitive tennis continues well into the 80s
USTA leagues are organized locally through the USTA Florida section. Contact your local tennis center for information on joining a team.
The Medicare Connection
Tennis is excellent exercise — it improves cardiovascular fitness, coordination, balance, and mental acuity. Studies have shown that regular tennis players have significantly lower rates of cardiovascular disease and longer life expectancy than non-players.
If you're managing a condition like arthritis or have had joint surgery, ask your doctor about Medicare-covered physical therapy to help you play safely and comfortably. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include fitness benefits that can offset the cost of court fees and lessons.
