Medicare Enrollment Mistakes in Delray Beach

Delray Beach is one of Palm Beach County's most vibrant retirement communities. But even well-informed Delray Beach seniors make costly Medicare enrollment mistakes. Here are the most common ones -- and how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Missing the Initial Enrollment Period

Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period (3 months before your birthday month through 3 months after) is your most important Medicare window. Missing it without qualifying employer coverage results in permanent late enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D.

How to avoid it: Mark your calendar 3 months before your 65th birthday and start the enrollment process early.

Mistake #2: Taking COBRA Instead of Medicare

This is one of the most expensive mistakes I see. Many Delray Beach seniors take COBRA when they retire, thinking it protects them from Medicare penalties. It does not. COBRA is not qualifying coverage for Medicare purposes, and your 8-month Special Enrollment Period continues to run while you are on COBRA.

How to avoid it: Enroll in Medicare when your employer coverage ends, even if you plan to take COBRA for other family members.

Mistake #3: Missing the Medigap Open Enrollment Window

When you first enroll in Part B at 65, you have a 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period during which insurers cannot deny you coverage or charge higher premiums based on your health. After this window closes, switching Medigap plans requires medical underwriting.

How to avoid it: Enroll in a Medigap plan during your 6-month window, even if you are healthy. You can always switch later if you qualify medically.

Mistake #4: Choosing a Plan Based on Premium Alone

The lowest-premium Medicare Advantage plan is not always the best value. A plan with a $0 premium but high copays and a narrow network may cost you far more than a plan with a modest premium and comprehensive coverage.

How to avoid it: Compare total annual costs -- premium plus estimated copays and coinsurance -- not just the monthly premium.

Mistake #5: Not Reviewing Coverage Every Year

Medicare plans change every year. A plan that was excellent last year may have increased premiums, changed its formulary, or narrowed its network.

How to avoid it: Review your coverage every Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 - December 7). I do this for my clients at no charge.
