How to Use Medicare Plan Finder to Compare Plans in Your Area

Medicare Plan Finder -- available at Medicare.gov -- is the official government tool for comparing Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans available in your area. It's free, comprehensive, and updated annually. Here is how to use it effectively.

What Medicare Plan Finder Shows You

For each plan in your area, Medicare Plan Finder displays:

  • Monthly premium
  • Annual deductible
  • Estimated annual drug costs (based on your specific medications)
  • Star quality rating (1-5 stars)
  • Out-of-pocket maximum (for MA plans)
  • Extra benefits (dental, vision, hearing)
  • Provider network information
  • Formulary details

Step 1: Go to Medicare.gov/plan-compare

Navigate to medicare.gov/plan-compare. You can use the tool without logging in, but creating a Medicare.gov account allows you to save your information and compare plans more accurately.

Step 2: Enter Your Information

ZIP code: Plan availability varies by county -- enter your ZIP code to see plans available in your specific area.

Coverage type: Select what you're looking for:

  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans
  • Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage (MAPD)
  • Standalone Part D drug plans
  • Medigap plans (limited comparison functionality)

Step 3: Enter Your Medications

This is the most important step for accurate cost comparison. Enter every prescription medication you take:

  • Drug name (brand or generic)
  • Dosage
  • Quantity per fill
  • Frequency (30-day, 90-day supply)

The tool will calculate your estimated annual drug costs under each plan -- this is far more useful than comparing premiums alone.

Tip: Have your medication bottles or pharmacy printout handy when entering drugs.

Step 4: Enter Your Pharmacies

Enter the pharmacies you prefer to use. The tool will show whether each pharmacy is in-network for each plan and whether it's a preferred pharmacy (lower cost-sharing).

Step 5: Review and Compare Plans

The tool displays plans sorted by estimated total annual cost (premium + drug costs + other cost-sharing). You can filter by:

  • Plan type (HMO, PPO, PFFS)
  • Premium range
  • Star rating
  • Extra benefits

Sort by estimated annual cost -- not just premium. A plan with a $0 premium but high drug costs may cost you more than a plan with a $50 premium and low drug costs.

Step 6: Check the Star Ratings

Medicare rates plans on a 1-5 star scale based on quality and performance. Look for plans with 4 or 5 stars -- they have better track records for customer service, care coordination, and member satisfaction.

Special enrollment: If you're currently in a plan rated below 3 stars for 3 consecutive years, you have a Special Enrollment Period to switch to a higher-rated plan.

Step 7: Verify Your Doctors Are In-Network

For Medicare Advantage plans, verify that your current doctors are in the plan's network before enrolling. The Plan Finder links to each plan's provider directory.

Important: Provider directories are not always up to date. Call your doctor's office directly to confirm they accept the specific plan you're considering.

Limitations of Medicare Plan Finder

  • Medigap comparison is limited: Plan Finder doesn't show Medigap premiums from all insurers. Use it as a starting point, then get quotes directly from insurers.
  • Drug costs are estimates: Actual costs may vary based on pharmacy, tier exceptions, and other factors.
  • Extra benefits aren't fully detailed: The tool shows whether a plan has dental/vision/hearing benefits but may not show the full details.

When to Use a Licensed Medicare Specialist

Medicare Plan Finder is a useful tool, but it has limitations. A licensed independent Medicare specialist can:

  • Compare all plan types (MA, Medigap, Part D) side by side
  • Verify your doctors are in-network
  • Explain the trade-offs between plan types
  • Help you understand the fine print
  • Assist with enrollment
