Is Plan G Worth It in Florida? A Full Medicare Supplement Breakdown

Medicare Supplement Plan G is the most popular Medigap plan in Florida -- and for good reason. But with monthly premiums ranging from $120 to $180 or more, many seniors wonder: is it really worth it?

The honest answer: for most Florida seniors, yes. Here is why.

What Does Plan G Cover?

Plan G covers virtually everything that Original Medicare does not -- with one exception: the Medicare Part B deductible ($283 in 2026).

Plan G covers:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted)
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Part A deductible ($1,736 in 2026)
  • Part B excess charges
  • Foreign travel emergency (80%, up to plan limits)

The only thing Plan G does NOT cover:

  • The Part B deductible ($283/year in 2026)

The Real Math: Is Plan G Worth It?

Let us run the numbers for a typical Florida senior.

Plan G costs:

  • Monthly premium: ~$140/month = $1,680/year
  • Part B deductible: $283/year
  • Total annual cost: ~$1,963

Without Plan G (Original Medicare only):

  • Part B deductible: $283/year
  • 20% coinsurance on all Part B services
  • Part A deductible: $1,736 per benefit period
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance: $209.50/day (days 21-100)
  • No cap on out-of-pocket costs

The break-even point: If you have one significant health event -- a hospitalization, a surgery, or a series of specialist visits -- Plan G typically pays for itself. The Part A deductible alone ($1,736) exceeds the annual premium for many Plan G policies.

Who Benefits Most From Plan G?

Plan G is especially valuable for:

  • Seniors with chronic conditions who see doctors and specialists regularly
  • Seniors who have had or expect surgery -- the hospital cost savings alone can be enormous
  • Snowbirds and frequent travelers who need nationwide coverage
  • Seniors who value predictability -- with Plan G, you know exactly what your healthcare will cost
  • Seniors who want freedom of choice -- no networks, no referrals, any Medicare provider in the country

Who Might Not Need Plan G?

Plan G may be more than you need if:

  • You are in excellent health and rarely use medical services
  • You are comfortable with the risk of higher out-of-pocket costs in exchange for lower premiums
  • You are considering High-Deductible Plan G (HDG) as a lower-premium alternative

Plan G vs Plan N: Which Is Better?

Plan N is the main alternative to Plan G. It has a lower premium but requires small copays ($20 for office visits, $50 for ER visits) and does not cover Part B excess charges.

The math on Plan N:

  • If you visit the doctor 6 times a year: $120 in copays
  • If you visit the ER once: $50 in copays
  • Total extra costs: ~$170/year

If the premium difference between Plan G and Plan N is more than $170/year, Plan N may save you money. If it is less, Plan G is the better value.
