Medicare Advantage Plans in Florida: Pros and Cons for 2026

Medicare Advantage has grown dramatically in popularity over the past decade. In Florida, more than half of Medicare beneficiaries are now enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. But is it the right choice for you?

Here is an honest, balanced look at the pros and cons of Medicare Advantage in Florida for 2026.

The Pros of Medicare Advantage

Pro #1: Low or $0 Monthly Premiums

Many Medicare Advantage plans in Florida have $0 monthly premiums. You still pay your Part B premium ($202.90/month in 2026), but the Advantage plan itself costs nothing extra. This is a significant financial advantage for seniors on a fixed income.

Pro #2: Extra Benefits

Medicare Advantage plans often include benefits that Original Medicare does not cover:

  • Routine dental care (cleanings, fillings, extractions)
  • Vision care (eye exams, glasses, contacts)
  • Hearing exams and hearing aids
  • Fitness memberships (SilverSneakers or similar)
  • Over-the-counter allowances
  • Transportation to medical appointments
  • Meal delivery after hospital stays

These extras can be genuinely valuable -- especially dental and vision coverage, which many seniors need.

Pro #3: Prescription Drug Coverage Included

Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, simplifying your coverage into a single plan.

Pro #4: Annual Out-of-Pocket Maximum

Medicare Advantage plans cap your annual out-of-pocket costs. In 2026, the maximum is $9,350 for in-network services (lower for many plans). Original Medicare alone has no cap.

Pro #5: Care Coordination

HMO plans with a primary care physician can provide better care coordination for seniors with complex health needs. Your PCP manages your overall care and coordinates referrals.

The Cons of Medicare Advantage

Con #1: Network Restrictions

Medicare Advantage plans use networks. If your doctor is not in-network, you pay more -- or may not be covered at all (for HMO plans). This is the most common complaint I hear from Medicare Advantage enrollees.

Con #2: Prior Authorization Requirements

Medicare Advantage plans frequently require prior authorization for procedures, specialist visits, hospitalizations, and certain medications. This can delay care and create administrative burdens for both patients and providers.

Con #3: Plans Change Every Year

Medicare Advantage plans can change their premiums, benefits, formularies, and networks every year. A plan that works well this year may be significantly different next year.

Con #4: Limited Coverage When Traveling

Most Medicare Advantage plans only cover emergency and urgent care outside their service area. If you travel frequently or split time between states, you may find yourself without coverage for routine care.

Con #5: Higher Out-of-Pocket Costs When You Are Sick

While the $0 premium is attractive, Medicare Advantage plans can have significant cost-sharing when you actually use care. Copays for specialist visits, hospitalizations, and procedures can add up quickly for seniors with serious health conditions.

Con #6: Difficult to Switch to Medigap Later

If you start with Medicare Advantage and later want to switch to a Medicare Supplement plan, you may face medical underwriting -- meaning you could be denied coverage or charged higher premiums based on your health history.

The Bottom Line for 2026

Medicare Advantage can be an excellent choice for healthy Florida seniors who want low premiums, extra benefits, and are comfortable with a network-based system.

But for seniors with ongoing health conditions, those who travel frequently, or those who want the freedom to see any doctor without restrictions, a Medicare Supplement plan often provides better value -- despite the higher premium.

The best way to decide is to compare both options side by side for your specific situation. That is exactly what I do -- at no cost to you.
